Faster, Better and Greener Synthesis

The use of microwave technology in synthetic chemistry and biochemistry has grown to such an extent that it has now become the default method of choice for a great variety of reactions, especially in the production of peptides and proteins.

The reason for this rise to prominence is simple, thanks to microwave synthesis reaction times are decreased and yields and purity are improved through a reduction in unwanted side reactions. Microwave synthesis even permits new reaction schemes not possible using other conventional heating protocols.

Going hand-in-hand with these advantages for the researchers are benefits for all of us. Microwave synthesis is energy efficient and uses less harmful solvents – even allowing a wider range of reactions under aqueous conditions. The result is a ‘greener’ chemistry, which helps herald the beginning of a new and productive era of chemistry.

In order to fully utilise the advantages that microwave synthesis can offer it is vital that instrumentation is efficient, effective and reliable. The days of improvisation with domestic microwave ovens are thankfully long over and as CEM, leading innovators in the laboratory application of microwaves, show, it is now possible now to produce elegant simple-to-use, intuitive equipment, fit for every eventuality.

CEM’s modular Discovery Series is an exceptionally versatile line of single-mode instruments that can be combined with a number of accessories to support many different types of research. Temperature sensitive reactions will benefit from the CoolMate, which uses a proprietary cooling media to permit sub-ambient reactions like eliminations, substitutions and the formation of carbanions and similar reactive intermediates.

The Gas Addition Kit allows microwaves to be applied for carbonylations, hydrogenations and any other similar reactions that involve a gaseous reagent. Also for those researchers involved in flow chemistry, Voyager Stop-Flow Microwave Synthesis provides scalability based on a Discover platform. Other specialist options exist for those interested in proteomics or a cost-effective manual peptide synthesiser.

CEM’s MARS 6 features a multimode cavity that can perform up to 24 reactions in parallel or large-scale chemistries in vessels up to 5L capacity. With pressure and temperature options available for a diverse range of vessels the MARS 6 is the perfect choice for both research and teaching purposes.

As the developer of the first dedicated microwave peptide synthesiser, it is not surprising to find that CEM offers both the Liberty Blue for fast and efficient laboratory peptide synthesis and the mid-scale Liberty XL, capable of automatically preparing hundreds of grams of peptide.

Whether you are working in polymer science, material science, drug development or any one of a wide range of research or commercial activities now using microwave synthesis, CEM will have the equipment to make your work a success.
