The ImageXpress Micro Widefield High Content Screening System is the ultimate combination of speed and flexibility, and both in a turnkey solution that streamlines research and drug discovery in a fully integrated high content screening environment.

Built by Molecular Devices on more than 10 years of automated imaging experience, it captures research-quality images with the widest range - up to 100x - of objective lenses available in an HCS system. This gives scientists the ability to analyse protein interaction at the appropriate resolution for the sample being studied.

The 100 nm resolution stages precisely locate and identify sub-cellular features, ensuring excellent X, Y and Z positioning to simplify the tracing of individual cells during time-lapse experiments or mapping neuronal outgrowth across multiple images.

Applications

Cellular imaging and high content screening is used widely to measure cellular function including cell morphology and the function and behaviour in cells, such as protein interaction. It is applied in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research settings to help advance the treatment of illnesses including spinal cord injuries, neurological disorders, chronic inflammation, organ and tissue transplantation and cancer.

The Molecular Devices screening and imaging equipment is primarily used for target identification and validation, screening using functional genomics, quality control, assay development using fluorescent labels or GFP, and drug screening.

Design and setup

Cellular analysis of protein interaction and other functions is made easy with the dedicated setup wizard. This allows each user to acquire and process preconfigured experiments, cutting back on preparation time. The software also offers industry-leading stage and focus control as well as a high-speed laser auto focus option.

The modular design means hardware options can be chosen to suit the requirements of the experiment and live cell assays and long time-lapse experiments are made possible through the integrated environmental control and fluidics options.

Interference from chemical labels is prevented by label-free phase contrast imaging, enabled with the transmitted light option. Addition of the external excitation filter wheel allows micro-plate based excitation ratiometric experiments like calcium imaging with Fura-2.

Further imaging options

A wide range of assays to monitor live cell biological processes, including protein interaction, are enabled by the platform's modular design. Everything from simple label-free imaging to long monitoring to compound addition and post-wash recovery is possible.

The ImageXpress Micro system's unique phase contrast optics allow high contrast imaging of unstained samples in order to monitor bio relevant cell types that may be sensitive to fluorescent labels. This application can also be useful when scrutinizing cell quality before and after biochemical assays, or combines with fluorescent applications and environmental control.

The Live Cell or Environmental Control options allow the system to be configured to mimic conditions within a laboratory incubator, with settings for temperature, gas mixture and humidity, and the Fluidics option facilitates compound addition and cell washing to characterize compound potency or to determine incubation times. 

The External Filter Wheel option can give greater insight to ion exchange and intracellular function by monitoring dual-excitation wavelength intracellular ion concentration measurements, such as calcium and pH levels.
