Powder Flow With Dynamic and Static Options

Powder flow property measurements cover two categories - dynamic and static analysis. Dynamic instruments measure flow properties as the test material is moving or about to move. Static instruments measure powder that is not moving and has often been exposed to pressure.

In order to obtain a complete picture of powder flow, both types of test are required, but one or other may be used to solve specific problems.

Dynamic analysis

The Revolution Powder Analyzer can measure the ability of a powder to flow, consolidate, granulate, cake, pack and fluidise. It measures power, time and variances in  the power of the powder in a rotating drum.

Data can then be used to quantify the sample's particle behaviour during process applications such as blending, tableting, mixing and transportation.

Easy to load and with automatic run settings, the analyser eliminates the problem of human error.

A rotating drum, available in several sizes to accommodate varying sample sizes, measures the flow properties. The stepper motor turns the high precision silicone rollers to rotate the drum at a rate, from 0.1 to 200 rpm, which is set by the operator. Prep time can also be indicated and the digital camera takes photographs during the process at up to 30 frames per second.

By using patent pending algorithms, the software measures the behaviour of the powder and how this changes over time. This can then be used to calculate various parameters representing the powder's quality and process ability.

Static analysis

The Evolution Powder Tester (EPT) is an economical and easy to use powder flow tester to measure unconfined yield strength of a material.

It can be used at up to 500 KPa to assess the unconfined yield strength at one pressure or several different pressures. The flow function presents the material's gain in strength as more pressure is applied to it.

For powders that are stored for any length of time this is an important factor, and time flow function can also be created. Furthermore, the EPT time cells can be placed in ovens or humidity chambers so other environmental effects on the sample can be studied.

The EPT has several advantages over traditional shear and uneasily testers as is a standalone instrument designed for the sole purpose of powder testing. This allows for a cost-effective design and quick testing time.
