Cryopreservation of Cells with CELLBANKER

Unless your biological sample has a very low water content, or you are not worried about damage to your specimens, freezing cells for storage requires you to take certain precautions. These can involve the use of involved (slow!) freezing rates, and liquid nitrogen, or you can make life easy for yourself and use CELLBANKER from amsbio.

CELLBANKER is the straightforward way to ensure stable long-term cryopreservation of cells of all types with consistently high cell viability and, in the case of stem cells, also maintained pluripotency, and the anticipated karyotype and proliferation ability.

Cryopreservation of cells can be achieved in a number ways - using both penetrating and non-penetrating cryoprotectants. Both types work by preventing the damaging large-scale growth of ice-crystals that would otherwise disrupt organelle and plasma membranes killing the cell.

The CELLBANKER range of freezing media for the cryopreservation of cells uses the penetrating cryoprotectant dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) to produce consistent and verifiable results for storage at either -80oC  or -196oC.

The initial product of the CELLBANKER series (1) was launched in 1992 and since then it has been used for a wide variety of mammalian cells – even the most sensitive.

The results for the cryopreservation of cells have been uniformly impressive for the 30+ cell types tested with no evidence that either storage temperature or the length of freezing makes any difference to the cryoprotective ability of CELLBANKER. 

The ready-to-use formulations have a long shelf life and now come in a serum and serum-free variety (CELLBANKER 1 AND 2) plus a special formulation for stem cells – STEM CELLBANKER. STEM CELLBANKER achieves significantly higher cell viability for stem cells after resuscitation from cryopreservation and freezing than cell lines preserved in a conventional freezing medium (10% DMSO and serum replacement medium).

Cell viability rates greater than 90% have been consistently obtained by independent analysis for a variety of cell lines.
